Dr Maurizio Viel, plastic surgeon at LCAS Dubai, with over 20 years experience tell us why more and more people are now turning to plastic surgery in cities like Dubai and London.
What trends have you noticed in plastic surgery in the last few years especially from LCAS Dubai and LCAS London?
Over the last few years, we notice the demand for plastic surgery increasing for women spanning larger social and age groups; our non-invasive cosmetic surgery procedures such as botox and fillers has tripled; and in our LCAS London office the number of men coming in for surgery has also quadrupled. In many of these social groups we come across, plastic surgery procedures can be as common as having your hair-dyed.
Are some plastic surgery procedures becoming more popular or are different types of women now requesting surgery?
We would say a little bit of both. VASER liposuction and breast augmentation (breast enlargements) are extremely popular plastic surgeries for us here at LCAS Dubai, and the biggest group of women coming to see us are the ‘Mummy’ category. Most of the Mums that we see may have lost their confidence after having children because their families have been their priority and often their own needs come last including their bodies. Then one day, they decide that enough is enough and they are determined to get back into shape with a little help from us.
Any statistics you can give us regarding plastic surgery, with particular reference to Dubai/the Middle East?
It is hard to give exact statistics but the trends are definitely there. Men doing plastic surgery are on the rise. In total with both men and women, LCAS Dubai sees 50% locals and 50% expat; and with such a large expat community there are nationalities that were previously shy to the idea of cosmetic or plastic surgery are coming forward more and more to get procedures done
